Tactical Stocks - Getting The Most From Your Remington 700
The Remington 700 is the World's most popular bolt action centerfire deer rifle. No other rifle combines the 700's strength, affordability, accuracy and ease of upgrade. It is the current sniper rifle of the US Army (M24 and XM2010), USMC (M40) and US Navy SEALs (Mk 13 Mod 5). The sheer popularity of the Remington 700 has made it the first choice of aftermarket parts and clone manufacturers.
Only the AR15 is perhaps more upgradeable than the Rem 700. This has allowed the manufacturer to sell the 700 with cheap, bendy plastic stocks that all but the most casual users will want to throw away at the first opportuniuty. After a new or tuned trigger, the next best accuracy improvement you will see with your 700 is through improved bedding. The best bedding you can get for a working rifle is to torque it down onto an aluminium bedding block or chassis. Stocks of this quality are a considerable investment, but you will never have to worry about packing your rifle into the hills in deep winter again.
Bell and Carlson have built their enviable reputation on producing light, utterly rigid stocks at affordable prices. They hand-wrap layers of composite materials including aramid fibers, graphite, fiberglass, epoxy gel coats and laminating resins onto an aluminium pillar bedding block, reinforced by polyurethane and milled fiberglass. At only two and a half pounds the resulting stock is utterly stiff. The Bell and Carlson Light Tactical stock is typical of their models and represents a great choice for right handed short action 700s used in a varmint or coyote control role. The Light Tactical Stock has a cut out beneath the rear of the stock to allow the left hand to cradle the rifle for greater control. 'Glass' bedding this rifle is a purely cosmetic option.
H-S Precision, the choice of the US Army for their M24 Sniper Weapon System, also employs a machined aluminum bedding block, bonded to fiberglass-reinforced, structural polyurethane foam. This self centers the rifle, securing it firmly against bumps and knocks. The H-S stock's light (2lb. 12 oz.) perfectly rigid stiock is the result of hand laminating Kevlar and fiberglass cloth and uni-directional carbon fiber strands. These stocks are completely weatherproof and can be used outside year-round. The exterior finish is a textured, matte, polyurethane baked on and able to shrug off the usual scuffs and knocks. H-S precision's PST series stock was selected as the Remington 700 Police stock and is available in conventional hinged floorplate and detachable magazine models in a choice of black or desert tan finish.
Both the above stocks are rather conventional in format and won't add much to the weight of the rifle, resulting in a package that is still relatively portable. However, when they designed their chassis system for a mid 1980s British Army sniper rifle competition, Accuracy International literally threw the book away when it came to aesthetics, resulting in an incredibly rugged and accurate weapon system. This used epoxy resin bonding to lock the rifle to the massive aluminium chassis resulting in a permanent bond for the life of the rifle. This resulted in a rifle that was insanely accurate but prohibitively expensive for civilian buyers. Despite their rifles soon becoming standard issue to the British, German, Belgian, Dutch, Australian and Swedish forces, AI realised that it needed to get into the US civil market. To make an affordable rifle they adapted their chassis system to take the Remington 700 in its short and long action guises.
AI's 'civilian' stock, the AICS, is milled from a single billet of aerospace grade aluminium onto which the glass reinforced polymer panels are bolted. The action is aligned perfectly by the V-shaped bedding block, torqued down with the two bolts supplied with the kit. The curious flat sided ergonomics make the rifle surprisingly easy to carry and AI offer a shoulder harness style sling that attaches to H&K style recessed attachment points. Provision is included for both AI and Harris bipods. The rifle includes a thumbhole pistol grip and a screw adjustable raisable cheekpiece to allow for different heights of sight. Length of pull is adjusted by bolt on spacers. AI's legendary quality magazines are available in 5 and 10 round double stack format for the .308 (or .308 parent case rounds like the 7mm-08 and .243) and a 5 shot format for the .300 Winmag. The Stage 1.5 and Stage 2.0 version differ in the latter boasting an ingenious folding mechanism, each being available in short and long action formats with panels in green, dark earth or black. This is a seriously expensive stock, running to three times the price of either the Bell & Carlson or H-S precision, and very heavy (5 lb. 5 oz ot 5 lb. 11 oz.) but it comes with serious military heritage and credibility as the US Navy have adopted the AICS for their Mk 13 Mod 5 sniper weapon system.
