Aimpoint's CompM3 Red Dot Sight
Aimpoint have won a great reputation for themselves over the last three and a half decades with their continuously developing range of red dot sights. So diagnostic is Aimpoint's red dot aiming point that any 'Aimpoint' fitted with any other color or shape of aiming point can instantly be verified as counterfeit. Two generations of Aimpoint have now served the US Army as their Close Combat Optic. The US Army could have afforded any other red dot sight on the market, but chose the ruggedness and fast, parallax free accuracy of the Aimpoint. They are also pressure proof down to 45 meters or 125 feet. The CompM3 is supplied with a rubber cover, available in Black or dark earth to further protect it, but this is really only to protect the finish as the sight itself is practically indestructible. Replacement covers can be bought.
The Aimpoint CompM3 is an improved version of the CompM2 which had been type classified by the US Army as their M68 CCO. This sight has improved 'ACET' circuitry that can squeeze over 50,000 hours out of an N cell battery at setting 7 out of 10 or an insane 500,000 hours on the NV setting. The CompM3 is optimized for Gen 3 night vision, but is compatible with all generations. Six day and four night brightness settings are provided. For sports shooters and hunters not wanting a night vision compatible sight, Aimpoint offer the less expensive CompML3 red dot sight.
A huge array of mounts are available for these 30mm tube sights. They can also be used in conjunction with the Aimpoint 3XMag 3X magnifier or its Eotech G23.FTS 3X magnifier equivalent to provide a longer range capability. The CompM3 and CompML3 are available in two different dot sizes - a 4 MOA dot for close range engagements and a 2 MOA dot which sacrifices some close range speed of target acquisition for greater accuracy at longer ranges.
In use the CompM3 is virtually parallax free - totally so from 50 meters on out. The brightest setting will cope with the highest levels of sunlight in the tropics. This sight projects no energy and will not give away your position or harm your eyesight The Aimpoints use a patented reflective coating that only reflects red at the exact frequency of the dot, letting all other light pass through - cheaper sights make the target a shade of blue. At 7.8 oz or 220 g. this is a very light sight for its bulk and will not overly encumber your rifle. Unlimited eye relief means the sight can be mounted anywhere on your rail, enabling you to place other items on your rail with great flexibility.
This sight can be used for any purpose you can turn a rifle, carbine or shotgun to at short to medium ranges - even wing shooting. It is hard to imagine a better sight for turkey hunting. In Europe it is popular or running boar and moose. These sights were not standardized by the US military but have a strong military heritage and are eminently suitable for law enforcement use.
