Work Your Way To Better Work Safety
Globally, there are enormous differences in workplace safety practices and awareness. In the Western economies, the subject is considered a matter of mutual concern to management and the worker, but one where the employer needs to take the lead.
So, for the employer, this will start with a workplace inspection to identify jobs or work conditions that contributed to undue strain, localized fatigue, pain or discomfort, regular overhead or heavy lifts, forceful and repetitive exertions, strained work positions, or exposure to continual body vibrations, and any chemical and emissions exposures
Doing this means designating hazards and establishing the risk hotspots.
From this, will follow a list of action points, which will include project points such as engineering controls, implementation of safer work processes, use of more environmentally and worker friendly chemicals, and safer work practices. These tasks need to be undertaken by the employer. Additionally, if this process has been done thoroughly, it will have considered whether all the necessary workplace safety signs are in place.
It’s imperative, that signs not just be wall decorations, but that they know the meaning and implications of the informational content of the safety signs around the place.
Safety signs are displayed because of a hazard in the vicinity. They, that is, employers and employees, have a joint responsibility with respect to safety and safety signs; they have a shared obligation. Safety signs are not an alternative to other tools of hazard management; they are to be put in place to gain additional leverage to all the hazard reduction hot-spots identified in the first review.
Building a safety culture in the workplace has numerous benefits for the whole organization. The investment is small in comparison to the improved higher team morale, employee welfare and lower insurance premiums. It is just good business management.
Responsible business management dictates paying attention to all matters related to OH&S.
