Rem 700 Sniper Stocks
The Remington 700 is without doubt the world's most successful commercial bolt action rifle. Its 'three rings of steel' construction, competitive pricing and continual innovation by Remington have lead to it being a firm favourite with hunters and target shooters the world over. Many armies around the world have standardized Remington 700s as their sniper rifle - the US Army, US Marine Corps and US Navy all have their own versions. Even the very latest XM-2010 sniper rifle is basically an upgraded Remington 700 in a chassis system.
The Remington 700 Police's combination of affordability, dependability and accuracy has made it the marksman's rifle of choice of police departments throughout the USA. One thing that builds its accuracy is the HS Precision Remington 700 Police stock. This stock is traditional in shape, with a vertical pistol grip with palm swell and a wide, flat bottomed almost beavertailed fore-end. No bedding is required as the aluminium bedding block chassis holds and centers the action, surrounded by laminated kevlar and fiberglass cloth bonded with laminating resin. To ensure lightness the core is made from reaction-injection molded polyurethane foam. The stock comes as standard with three sling swivel studs from Uncle Mike's. An Uncle Mike's recoil pad is fitted. H-S precision have 33 years of experience making some of the finest stocks on the market and this ultra rugged unit represents great value for money.
The next step in the progression is a chassis that is full length and adjustable but which still pays lip service to traditional aesthetics. The Accuracy Intenational AICS chassis system builds on the UK company's experience in producing sniper rifles for the UK, German, Dutch, Belgian and Australian armies. The AICS uses a full length aluminium frame milled from high grade aluminium onto which polymer panels and a buttplate are bolted to give the stock its unique look. This stock again does away with the need for bedding altogether. AICS stocks are made with green or black panels in long and short action and with or without folding butts to suit any application. The length of pull and cheekpiece heights are both adjustable. The AICS boosts the firepower of the Remington 700 system by taking detachable magazines. The magazines made for the standard short action Remington 700 in the AICS are 5 and 10 shot units that are not interchangeable with those used in the L96 series and AW. With the long action the 5 round magazine is the same as that used on the AWM. The US Navy seals use the Stage 2 (folding) AICS on their Mk 13 Sniper Weapon System.
The final step is to go the whole hog and get a chassis system that makes no pretence at traditional aesthetics. The JP Enterprises MOR-07 chassis system was designed by a shooter who wanted a no-compromise chassis that would give the short action Remington 700 AR-15 ergonomics. The MOR-07 is a straight line design, again made from aerospace aluminium to which any AR15 stock and pistol grip can be attached as can the accushot monopod. Alternative fore-ends are avaiable, the wide, bench-rest style one being standard and the tubular one being the option. JP Enterprises manufacture their own scope mounting system for this stock, the JPFTSM-30. JP offer their own ten round detachable mag for the short action Remington and the stock is compatible with Accuracy International magazines. You need to be careful whether your action takes AICS or AW type magazines as some manufacturers, Surgeon for example, will build you a 700 action for either. Like the Stage 2.0 AICS the MOR-7 stock folds - a particular boon when suppressors are used. The MOR-07 chassis is finished in a black Type III anodizing.
Carbon Fiber or Fiberglass?
I am debating whether I should purchase the Nike Vapor VII's or the Nike Vapor VII Superfly III's. The major difference for me is the carbon fiber chassis on the superfly's compared to the fiberglass bottom on the regular vapors. I know carbon fiber is stronger than fiberglass, but just how much stronger and should I be worried about the fiberglass breaking? The fiberglass is cheaper
I don't think you should be worried about that at all. The amount of layers they put on the fiberglass to make it durable and a quality product is significant. Likely, you are paying for the weight difference. Carbon fiber is strong and light but keep in mind the same resins they coat the chassis with to provide that strength are also in the fiberglass model. Carbon fiber is just that, a fiber. A resin is applied to both models to solidify them. Ultimately it is an issue of weight when looking at the price discrepancy.
Dell's XPS 13 Ultrabook: IT-friendly, 128GB SSD and backlit keyboard standard, arrives in February for $999 (Engadget)
You didn't think Dell was going to sit out the Ultrabook fad, did you? We'll
never know exactly what the hold-up was, but whatever the company's excuse it
finally has something to compete with the likes of the MacBook Air and ASUS
Zenbook UX31. The company just announced the XPS 13, which weighs in at a
shade less than three pounds (2.99, to be exact) and has a wedge profile that
tapers from .71 inches to .24 (18 to 6mm). With a starting price of $1,000, it
sports an aluminum lid and carbon fiber chassis -- a material we wish more
Ultrabook makers would incorporate. Though it has a 13-inch screen, it's the
kind of panel with bezels so narrow that Dell was able to build a chassis
small enough for a 12-inch system. Put bluntly, expect this to be one of the
most compact Ultrabooks around (though not the lightest).
What's that? You want technical details too? At the entry level, it'll come
with a Core i3 i5 processor, 128GB SSD, 4GB of RAM and backlit keyboard,
though you'll also be able to upgrade to a 256SSD and either a Core i5 ...
