Adapt Your Car To Suit Your Needs
Many, if not all vehicles can be adapted to some degree if you wish to drive yet have a disability. These modifications will make it easier climbing into and out of of the vehicle, make driving safer and more comfortable plus there are a range of motoring accessories available if you have an upper, lower body disability, or even when you have both.
Accessories that are reasonably simple to add to the vehicle include:
- Hand controls for the accelerator and brake pedals;
- Knobs for the steering wheel that can help with turning and control;
- Hoists, Ramps and lifting mechanisms making the car wheelchair accessible;
- Seat belts and harnesses;
- Rotating seats;
There are a swathe of studies available which examine the various kinds of modifications that are available to let you drive when you use a disability car, these vary from car controls, lifts, wheel chair access and companies who are able to rebuild production cars so that the disabled car is a bespoke design for the driver's specific needs.
If you require a vehicle which is suitable for a driver who has an upper body disability, for example the inability to use your arm, then you may want to look at having a steering wheel knob attached, automatic transmission, indicator switches and the horn either within a finger's reach or as foot controls so that you can operate them without letting go of the wheel, relocating the handbrake to the other side of the driver if that would suit you better, you might even chose to have joystick steering.
If you have an artificial limb which attaches below the elbow there are concave attachments for the steering wheel or gearstick depending on which side the affected arm is.
If you have limited use of the legs then you can get automatic transmission, eliminating the need for the clutch, moving the accelerator to the other side if you have a right leg disability, hand accelerator and brake controls and steering assistance.
It doesn't need saying that if you're getting a custom designed car then you should be fully trained in its operation before taking it on the public highway!
1994 ford ranger manual transmission problems?
ok so i know its extremely bad i dont wan't to hear about it but i've been leaving my truck in gear (manual transmission) for a while now haven't had the money or time to put into the e-brake now that i have money, but no time the trans is going out on me, hard to shift into all gears (and sometimes impossible) and the clutch seems to be going on me, such as today when i was trying to drive it the clutch was pressed all the way in and it was still catching i could feel it still catching first gear no matter how hard i pushed... i'm guessing synchronisers and clutch rebuild... am i correct? also today the truck won't go into gear unless im at a complete stop and turn off the truck and THEN shift it into first.... then i have one heck of a time getting it into second and third so on and so forth. any ideas?
Slave cylinder/ throw out bearing is going bad. This is a m5od mazda trans I have had three vehicles with them in it and I can tell you it is only about a $60 part. The problem is that it is in the bell housing and the trans has to be removed to change it. So as long as you have it out you might as well be smart (I was a moron the 1st one I did and was being cheap to.) and change the clutch while you are their or you will be pulling the trans out 10,00 miles later. A clutch kit that comes with a slave cylinder / bearing is only about $200.
P.S. it's ok to leave it in gear I did it in my 98 f150 they have the same trans and I got rid of it with 287,000 miles on the original trans.

68 gto guy is wrong it is not that hard the worst part is lifting the trans out/in. Should be done the same day if you get all of the parts before hand.
